Building Richmond's School

NEW BOOK!
“Children’s Art, Children’s Words: Richmond, California 1943-1966” by Joe Fischer
with about 200 illustrations

The children’s art in the Richmond Museum of History, called a “national treasure,” is the perhaps the largest, well-preserved collection in the U.S. The artwork was produced by children, ages two to twelve, during the years 1943 to 1966. It was a part of a large publicly funded program that consisted of fourteen child care canters. The collection was donated to the Museum by Monica Haley, who was its art director for twenty-two years. She implemented an innovative philosophy of art and educational instruction whose major focus was on the creative potential of children.
More information is in the book.

Building Richmond's School NEW BOOK!
"Building Richmond's School"
by Helen Pence
Between 1996 and 2005 former Richmond school teacher Helen Pence contributed articles to The Mirror, the newsletter of the Richmond Museum of History, about the growth of Richmond’s schools and the superintendents who oversaw the changes that took place from the beginning of the twentieth century through the 1990s.  Building Richmond's Schools is a one hundred-page narrative with photographs (from the museum's collection) compiled from these articles.
